The TEN COMMANDMENTS of SHOOTING SAFETY:

  1. Treat all guns as loaded
  2. Keep the muzzle in a safe direction at all times
  3. Be sure of your target and beyond before you pull the trigger
  4. Be sure the barrel and action are clear of obstructions and you have the right ammo
  5. When carrying a gun in a motor vehicle and not shooting, carry the gun unloaded, action open, safety on
  6. Never point a gun at anything you don't want to shoot
  7. Always unload a gun before you climb a fence, a hill, or tree or jump a ditch.  Never pull a gun toward you by the muzzle
  8. Never shoot at a flat hard surface or water; think about ricochet
  9. Store all guns and ammo locked separately out of reach of children
  10. Avoid alcoholic beverages and mood altering drugs before and during shooting

SAFETY TIPS

  • When carrying a firearm, keep your finger outside the trigger guard
  • Don't handle any firearm if you are not totally familiar with it
  • Do not hand to someone or take a gun from someone before making sure that you verified it was unloaded and the cylinder or action is open
  • Be sure of your target and beyond before you pull the trigger.  Remember, a .22 caliber round will travel a mile
  • More accidents are caused by careless firearm handling.  If you are cold, warm up, if you are tired , give up
  • Hunters must make positive identification of game
  • Most important is color of clothing worn big game hunting.  Do not wear camouflage or brown.  You must be seen by other hunters.  Wear outer garments of blaze orange
  • When hauling firearms to a tree stand, firearms must be unloaded and the action open.  Before using a haul line, make sure the muzzle is pointed down.
  • A keen eye and steady hand may get you a big buck but following the safety rules will get you home safe

TIPS USING A TREE STAND

Use a commercial certified tree stand only.  Use a full body harness FAS type.  Injuries or death can occur when hunters fall from a tree stand.
